Career Guidance/Assessment

(Pupils grade 11 and 12)

The Birkman Method® is a powerful behavioural, social perception, and occupational interest assessment that goes much, much deeper than other standard career assessments.  With scientifically proven accuracy, the tool can identify behavioural styles (usual productive behaviours), motivations, and underlying needs. It doesn’t just suggest careers to explore; it actually matches a person to the workplace where people with similar personal characteristics are reporting success and personal satisfaction in those jobs, linking directly to O*Net (, the USA Department of Labor database to learn more about each career identified.

Additional to  career information, the Birkman Method® also assesses what makes the individual  “tick” and it helps to get to critical answers about how we learn, think, decide, communicate and relate to others. The Birkman highlights needs that are not easily observed by each individual or those around them. And with great accuracy can also reveal the stress behaviours if one’s needs are not met. This information allows people to learn to understand and accept themselves.

How can The Birkman Method® results be applied?

Birkman is found on many college campuses in the USA.  Sometimes The Birkman Method® is part of academic and career planning and placement and other times it is used in colleges, schools or departments such as colleges/schools of business or education as a teaching tool.  Birkman International reports the following sample of institutions using the Birkman Method® on their campuses:  Harvard, University of California Los Angeles, University of Southern California, University of Tennessee, Texas A&M University, University of South Carolina, Emory University, Colgate University, Duke University, and the University of Houston.

  3. Revealing the unique strengths and characteristics of your child that can be used to promote him/her in job interviews.
  4. Gaining understanding of legitimate personal needs that are often misunderstood by your child and others, and discovering practical ways to have those needs met in positive ways.
  5. Improving your child’s understanding of how he or she can positively or might negatively communicate with others in the school/home/work environment.

Five ways the Birkman Method® can help you as a parent:

  1. During this stressful time in your child’s life, the Birkman offers reports such as “The Biggest Mistakes you can Make with Him or Her” giving you specific ways that you can speak helpful words, or refrain from speaking words that will create frustration and relational conflict.
  2. The Birkman Method® takes the guessing out of the conversation.  With scientific accuracy you will see the unique strengths and underlying needs of your child.
  3. The Birkman adds new, non-judgmental language to describe personal characteristics and label stress-producing situations.
  4. Reports such as “How to Talk with Him or Her” or “Ways to Motivate” will give you specific suggestions for how to keep your child motivated and engaged in the career pursuit.
